Asics tried to improve the upper with a full-length engineered mesh in the Asics Gel Kayano’s latest version, 30.
The upper’s eco-friendly material and supportive design comfortably fit various foot profiles.
I loved that the Asics finally listened to us and included a semi-gusseted tongue in the Kayano 30.
The midfoot lockdown gets more secure.
Besides that, the heel collar in the v30 is also comfortable for good padding, similar to the v29.
Though they added a finger loop in the Nimbus 25 from the Nimbus 24, the newest Kayano still lacks the feature.
On the contrary, Asics redesigned the Kayano 29’s upper with a soft upper compared to the Kayano 28.
They used recycled material for the Engineered Stretch-Knit upper to improve comfort and breathability. The stretchy upper hugs the feet well, and the toe box leaves wiggle room for the toe.
Unlike the 30, this shoe has a non-gusseted tongue, which is a drawback for many. However, it was not an issue for me.
I found no side tongue moving after lacing the shoe in the test run.
The well-padded heel section ensures a secure lock-down. However, this shoe also lacks a heel tab similar to the Asics Gel-Kayano 28 and Asics GT 2000 9.
A great feature that enhances the design is the reflective element, and both shoes offer one at the back of the heel. Though it’s not great in the v29, the nighttime visibility is excellent on the v30.
2. Breathability Showdown
While Asics Gel-Nimbus 25 and Gel-Cumulus 25 are average in breathability, Gel-Kayano 30 performs excellently.
Thanks to the improved upper and strategically placed ventilation holes.
However, the breathability is not favorable to Kayano 29. It’s okay at normal temperatures, but over 35 degrees Celsius, it can feel too hot.

So, while it can serve well in winter, the Kayano 30 or Saucony Triumph 20 is a better option for summer or hot days.

The slightly increased width under the heel, midfoot, and toe enhances the stability compared to the Kayano 29.
In my test run, the outsole grip was outstanding on various surfaces. Overall, it was a comfortable and supportive running experience.
Meanwhile, Kayano 29 also features the AHAR Plus compound rubber on its outsole.
This carbon rubber offers robust durability and traction. Heel strikers take advantage of it with a secure grip and adequate support.
Overall, I experienced a stable and consistent ride.
4. Midsole Construction and Cushioning
Midsole is where Asics made several changes from the Kayano v28 to v29 and v30.
The latest model is improvised with the newest FlyteFoam Blast Plus Eco with the new internal PureGel unit.
The arch support technology 4D Guidance System is a standout feature, making this shoe superior for stability.
While the Kayano 28 uses FlyteFoam Blast in the midsole with Gel technology, the Kayano 29 features the new FlyteFoam Blast Plus with the old Gel technology.
ASICS has redefined the TRUSSTIC system and DUOMAX technology for arch support and features a Light truss system in the v29. The technology increased the midsole durability.
Regarding cushioning, the latest Kayano 30 features a stack height of 40mm and 30mm on the heel and forefoot, respectively.
On the other hand, the predecessor 29 exhibits a slightly lower stack height compared to its successor. It has only a 25mm heel stack and a 15mm forefoot stack.

5. Supremacy of Comfort
Regarding comfort, I like having a padded tongue. And Asics Kayano and Brooks Adrenaline are a top pick for that.
Asics Kayano 30 features a highly padded tongue. It provides excellent comfort and fit without any lacing pressure on the midfoot.
Though the thickness is above average, a bit more was expected.
But to prevent the burden of extra weight, a cut was required.
The new 4D Guidance System and supportive sole ensure excellent energy return, leading to a comfortable ride.

When I tried the v30, I thought it had an attractive padded tongue. Then I put on the v29 and realized it has even more padding.
However, it’s still less from the v28’s insane tongue thickness.

Kayano 29 promised to be a comfort king, and it’s one of them aside from the heel collar.
So, say goodbye to lace bites forever.
The toe box has ample room to fit slightly wide feet. But, choosing a wide or extra-wide version is always recommended for wide feet.
6. Fit, Sizing, and Durability
In my usual men’s US size 9, Gel-Kayano 30 fits true to size. One of my friends went with a half-size down, which was just slightly snug.
The toe box width was ample, and I had enough wiggle room.
The decent volume on the forefoot is also soft and stretchy to mold the feet well. The midfoot and rearfoot fit typically.
Usually, stability shoes tend to play it safe with a fully rigid heel counter, but the Kayano 30 has only firmness on the bottom half.
When it comes to durability, Kayano 30 is a mixed bag. 
Despite having fantastic breathability, the upper endurance is top-notch, but the heel collar shows some wearing and tearing after a prolonged run.
The AHAR in the outsole is also great for abrasion resistance so it can serve you for a long time.
On the other hand, when I slipped on the Kayano 29 for the first time, it was slightly snug in the midfoot and forefoot for the lower volume design. But it’s a true-to-size fit.
The snug feeling goes away over time for the stretchy upper. Then, it feels more comfortable without feeling squeezed.
The thick tongue also helps for a secure midfoot lockdown.
Overall durability is also excellent for the AHAR in the outsole and LITETRUSS in the midsole.

Asics Gel Kayano 30 and 29 both come at the same price.
At ~$160, both footgear offer new running shoe technology for a better riding experience. Besides that, Kayano also focuses on stability and durability.
So, the value they offer is justified to me. It’s a good investment in the long run.

The Kayano 30’s soft Flytefoam Blast Plus Eco midsole absorbs shock like a champ, making it ideal for easy runs and long distances. The broader base and structured upper ensure a smooth, stable ride in recovery days.
The Kayano 29 features the Flytefoam Blast midsole. It’s an excellent pick for faster paces and tempo runs. The lower cushion than the v30 also gives a ground feel. Besides, the outsole can outrun the successor in durability.
Though both shoes are great and meet my requirements, I use the Kayano 30 more than the Kayano 29 for the higher cushion, stability, and breathability.
