Asics has been developing running shoes for over 60 years to provide better, more comfortable, and more performance-oriented shoes.

The Kayano and GT-1000 are two such series that provide innovative design and cutting-edge technology to attract daily runners.

Asics GT-1000

Asics GT-1000 series competes with some of the best running shoes by keeping your budget at bay.

Asics Kayano

The shoe features ASICS’s signature Gel cushioning system to provide excellent shock absorption.overview-of-asics-kayano

It’s widely popular among runners as a stability shoe for its impressive pronation support.

Every Asics series has unique characteristics. All the models under the series follow the ideology and bring an upgraded version each year.

Therefore, knowing about the series is vital before buying a model from Asics to ensure an accurate purchase.

Feature Differences Between Asics Kayano 30 and GT-1000 12

Asics reigns supreme in the market with its impressive support and stable running shoes.

However, they cater to differences from series to series for different purposes. Even in the latest model, they have technological and price gaps that influence decision-making.

Let’s talk about the differences between the latest models of the two most popular series, the Asics Kayano and GT-1000, below.

Here are the feature differences between Asics Kayano 30 and GT-1000 12:

Upper Material & Design

Asics Kayano 30 uses engineered knit for the upper construction. It’s stretchy and very breathable.

There are many perforations on the vamp and under the eyestay for easy air circulation. It keeps the feet cool and dry, especially in the summer season.

Kayano 30 has six eyelets on each side and contains a regular lacing system.

The tongue is thick and has a lace holder above for better fitting. An Asics logo inside a hexagon is clearly visible at the top of the tongue.

Kayano 30 shoes come in 21 colors, featuring black, white, blue, grey, etc.

The Asics logo is present on the medial and lateral sides of the shoe, matching the primary color contrast.

The Gel Kayano 30 is printed above the heel to demonstrate the model name.

On the other hand, Asics GT-1000 12 uses engineered mesh for the upper.

It has larger perforations than the Kayano 30, which improves breathability and provides a comfortable feel in all seasons.

GT-1000 12 also has six eyelets on each side and a regular lacing style.gt-1000-12-eyelets

The tongue is thinner but slightly larger than the Kayano 30. An Asics logo at the top symbolizes the branding.

Unlike the color variation in Kayano, the GT-1000 12 only comes in 10 different colors. It offers the primary black, white, blue, and grey colors.

The Asics logo is present on both medial and lateral sides, and the GT-1000 12 name is written at the back.

Sole Technology

The sole has a lot of technological differences between the Asics GT 1000 12 and the Kayano 30.

Insole

The Kayano 30 uses the OrthoLite X-55 sockliner, and GT-1000 12 uses the OrthoLite X-30 sockliner.

But unfortunately, none of the insoles are removable.

Midsole

The Asics Kayano 30 uses FF Blast+ Eco for the midsole. It’s very soft and provides cloud-like comfort.

This new midsole is 4mm thicker than its predecessor, delivering a more pillowy feel underneath.

Asics uses Rearfoot PureGEL technology in the heel area to give a soft landing and bouncy feedback. Whenever I step on the heel striker, the hidden gel spreads and absorbs the shock.

However, there’s no additional support system like Trusstic to provide additional stability.

In contrast, Asics GT-1000 12 uses FlyteFoam to construct the midsole.

It doesn’t give a soft and bouncy feel like Kayano 30. Instead, it provides a firmer feel and responsiveness in every stride.

The GT-1000 12 also utilizes the Rearfoot GEL technology to absorb the shock during landing.

Moreover, it has a Trusstic system under the midsole to stabilize the feet and improve medial support.

Outsole

Kayano 30 and GT 1000 12 use the same Asics High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR) Plus rubber outsole.outsole-of-asics-gt-1000-and-asics-kayano

But, the lug pattern is different in these models.

GT-1000 12 uses a traditional outsole pattern that is sufficient for traction on wet and dry surfaces.

However, the pattern in Kayano 30 is entirely different. It uses a 4D guidance system to improve stability and give a more balanced stride.

It also ensures the proper grip and traction on wet and dry surfaces.

Size & Weight

Both Asics Gel-Kayano 30 and GT-1000 12 fit true to size. So, you can buy any model online without worrying about the regular size.

ParameterAsics Gel-Kayano 30Asics GT-1000 12
Stack HeightHeel: 40mm
Forefoot: 30mm
Heel: 32.5mm
Forefoot: 24.5mm
Heel-to-toe Drop10mm8mm
Weight10.7oz/ 303gm (US Men 9)9.7oz/ 235gm (US Men 9)

The midsole of the Kayano 30 is thicker than the GT 1000 12, for which the stack height is much higher. Also, the cushioning is better in the Kayano.

Therefore, it weighs more compared to the same size GT-1000 12.

Fit & Comfort

The Kayano 30 has a soft and stretchy knit upper. It offers a snug fit and wraps my feet very nicely.

It has completely redeveloped the comfort level from Asics Gel Kayano 28 and Asics GT 2000 9 and provided an upgrade.

The Kayano 30 is slightly wider, so I had no issue sliding my feet effortlessly.

The gusseted tongue holds my feet in one place, and the external back heel counter helps provide a comfortable stride.

Asics Kayano 30 is exceptionally great for people with wide feet and bunions. The extra space in the toe box gives me sufficient space to stretch my feet on every step.

The midsole is very soft and bouncy. It delivers a great energy return and absorbs the shock after landing.

On the other hand, the GT-1000 12 offers a breathable mesh upper.fit-and-comfort-of-asics-gt-1000

It feels more comfortable to wear in warm weather, thanks to its larger perforation.

After wearing the Asics GT 1000 12 for the first time, it provided a regular and firm fitting. The shoe loosens a bit after running a couple of sessions.

However, the midsole isn’t as comfortable as the Kayano 30. Instead, it’s firm, and I can feel more of the surface in the long run.

But, GT-1000 12 serves great in quick runs and short distances. The responsiveness helps to pick up speed and longer strides.

Stability & Support

The Asics Kayano 30 is a super stability shoe, but surprisingly, it doesn’t have any supportive metal or rods under the midsole.

Instead, it provides the support and stability of the new 4D Guidance System. It helps to land the feet naturally, minimizing the under and over-pronation.

Also, the external back heel counter assists in stability and gives a comfortable stride.

In contrast, the stability in the GT-1000 12 comes from its LITETRUSS technology. It helps to prevent excessive inward roll and offers better midfoot support.

The external back counter improves the fit and helps increase stability.

Compared to the Asics GT 1000 10 and Asics GT 2000 9, the newer GT-1000 12 offers much more stability and support technology.

Durability & Performance

Speaking of durability and performance, the Asics running shoes are always top-class.

I’ve run around 150 miles wearing the Kayano 30, and the performance was superb.durability-and-performance-of-asics-kayano

For me, it seems there’s no break-in period for this shoe. It runs excellently in slow-paced and long distances.

I never felt uncomfortable with this shoe during my entire running period.

The upper and midsole are in perfect condition. The outsole has been negligibly worn out and performing as usual.

On the other hand, I’ve roughly used the GT-1000 12 for 100 miles.

The shoe is primarily best for running short distances with good speed. The midsole is firm but doesn’t affect at all in this range.

The midsole and upper are intact, and the outsole provides excellent grip on the road.

After using both models, I am sure they will last 350+ miles easily. But they can run more than 400+ miles with good care and maintenance.

Price Comparison

Asics Kayano 30 is a flagship running shoe, whereas the GT-1000 12 is a budget-friendly choice.
